In the Tigers first 99 wins, the team owed a lot of its success to a powerful defence and a formidable ground game.
So the Tigers stuck to the script for win number 100.
In a plot straight out of Hollywood, a young rookie from Shetland made his way to the big city and decided he would try American Football, the Glasgow Tigers will be glad he did.
He led the Tigers to a memorable win as he ran for 303 yards. On just his fourth rush of his American Football career, running back Lewis King torched the astroturf for 57 yards. WR, Jamie Conlan then caught the 2point conversion from QB Gregor Beattie.
But it was a tale of two rookies as on the other side of the ball, 16st Northern Irish LB Rob Gilmour ran the Sunderland Spartans ragged. On the Spartans first possession a 3rd down stop by Gilmour forced the Spartans to punt. Then, just four offensive plays later King galloped a 20 yard rush into the end zone.
The Spartans were ineffective in their next drive and the Tigers had the ball again. RB King got the ball and ran round the Spartans defence for his third score. As impressive as the King was at running, his job was made a little easier by a dominant display by the O line and impressive blocking by full back Lewis Begbie.
As well as the new star rookie on defence, veterans like Matthew Crammond and Paul Polson set the tone with a series of punishing hits on the Spartans. Unfortunately, with a little help from the over enthusiastic Tigers defence, the Spartans broke through, scoring a caught touchdown.
QB Gregor Beattie was leaning heavily on the running game as he was missing go-to receiver Rory Mcalpine, but Dave Mann stepped up with an impressive 30 yard TD grab. However the two point conversions was missed.
There never really was any doubt about Tigers recording a famous victory as they made light work of the Sunderland Spartans. The Spartans even tried some slightly misjudged mimicking of the Wildcat formation.
In the last quarter, Lewis King not happy with just a hat-trick of TDs and ran in for Touchdown No. 4, and only 9 yards short of the Tigers rushing record held by Kenny Mcphail, making the final score 32-6.
Key figures in some of the Tigers first 99 wins like RB Kenny McPhail and middle LB Andrew McGowan will not be missed while Lewis THE PONY King continues to run like a racehorse, and Rob THE BEAST Gilmour continues to tackle like, well, a beast.
