Another overcast day saw another tough battle in
Glasgow as the Tigers played the rebranded Napier
Mavericks. Despite the rebranding, it was a very
similar game to last year, with the game coming right
down to the wire.
Glasgow started off well and some powerful running
from Matt Burke during their second drive saw the
Tigers with 1st and Goal on the 4. It didn't take long
for the Tigers to convert, as the next play saw Burke
go in for the score. The 2PAT was no good.
Napier responded in style, however, when a couple of
big plays on the next drive saw them in the Glasgow
Red Zone. Phil Najemi then burst through for the score
from 9 yards out. The 2PAT was good, but the Mavericks
into the lead.
Napier continued to pressure the Tiger Defence during
the 2nd quarter and were rewarded when they got enough
for a 1st and Goal on the Glasgow 2 on 4th down, even
after dropping the ball after picking up enough for
the 1st down.
They were rewarded for their quick thinking when Jamie
Langston picked up another 6 points for Napier,
extending their lead to 8 points.
Both sides played with great intensity in the
remainder of the game until the 2 minute warning when
Glasgow forced Napier backwards and they had to punt
the ball away. Grant McAuslan fielded the ball at his
own 42 yard line and took it all the way down the
other sideline for the TD. Grayson Lee ran in the 2PAT
to tie it up.
There was no score in the rest of the game and NCAA
Overtime ensued. The Napier offence were up first and a great 9 yard
run on 1st down set up 2nd and short, but the Tiger D
stepped up to make it 3rd and short and then 4th and
short. Napier appeared to be out of their field goal
range, so the went for it and the Tiger D again came
up with a great play to stop them short.
The Tiger Offence went on the field and Matt Burke
took the first play all the way to the endzone to end
the game for a second consecutive Tiger OT victory.
