RB Lewis King carried for 204 yards and 2TDs and FB Lewis Begbie added a third. The game also saw the return of the veteran Pebbles but now on defense.
Horrible weather, questionable decisions, lack of discipline, and not a single pass completed on the day, this, ladies and gentleman, is BUAFL Football.
In a season that has seen two rookies be the stars of the show, in LB Rob Gilmour and RB Lewis King, it was left to 9 year veteran, Ronald PEBBLES Gaffin, returning for his 10th year of BUAFL football to take control and lead a dominant defence.
In Ronald PEBBLES Gaffin previous years of Tiger Football, he was the steady hand at running back. Now it appears, he is the lynchpin of a formidable Tigers defence. At outside linebacker, Pebbles used his football experience to telegraph plays that Rob Gilmour could only dream of.
Not to be out done RB Lewis King put up 60 yards on 5 carries in the 1st quarter. One he broke into the end zone with a 30 yard run. He then put the Tigers up by 8, with a 2-point conversion on a sweep.
In their next series due to holding penalties, the Tigers ended up in a 3rd and long situation. It was then that Lewis - The Shetland Pony - King began to run as if he was trying to catch the last ferry to the mainland, as he broke 5 tackles on a 65 yard score. 14-0.
The second quarter the Northumbria defence began to step up, mainly due to some impressive plays by their number 44 at Middle Linebacker.
In the second half, Dave -The Leg- Mann caused a touchback, and then the Northumbria defence went three and out. The Tigers offence then returned to the field before fan favourite Lewis Begbie was handed the ball on the 5 yard line. The theme tune from Chariots of Fire seemed to drift across the field and........, LEWIS BEGBIE- TOUCHDOWN. 22-0
Another great kick off and Northumbria had the ball on their 4-yard line. Northumbria then marched to the half-way line, , on the next play, Paul Polson bull-rushed the Northumbria centre before the snap, dislocating their QB arm in the process.
It was shaky at times, perhaps due to the absence of standout lineman Jeff Pawloski, but at the end of the day, the Tigers never looked in any danger and are only getting stronger, especially now with the re-addition of Ronald Gaffin, who had 14 tackles on the day, one for every 2 of his career year , helping defensive co-ordinator Alex Patterson to have the first shut out of his career.
